From TSC to Diabari? DU delegation evaluates Uttara housing plan amid hall construction and repairs

Dhaka University (DU) has begun actively exploring Uttara’s Diabari area as an alternative residential option for its students while the university advances plans to construct new halls and renovate existing ones. The move responds to the long-running accommodation shortage that has left many students without secure, on-campus residence. A DU press release confirmed that a senior university delegation carried out an on-site feasibility inspection on Tuesday.

During the site visit on 26 November 2025, the delegation carried out a ground-level assessment of the location’s facilities, security arrangements, transport connectivity, environment and infrastructure suitability – key criteria the university says must be met before any decision on temporary transfers or new construction. The PR office said the inspection was specifically aimed at determining where students could be temporarily housed during new hall construction and renovation work.

The inspection team included senior DU officials and external experts: Treasurer Prof. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury; Mohammad Abdur Rauf, Secretary of the Bridge Division and Executive Director of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority; retired secretary Dr. K. M. Kabirul Islam; DU’s Accounting Director Md. Saiful Islam; acting Chief Engineer Kazi Md. Akram Hossain; acting Estate Manager Fatema binte Mustafa; Transport Manager Mo Kamrul Hasan; and student leaders including DUCSU Vice-President Sadik Kayem, AGS Mohiuddin Khan and student transport secretary Asif Abdullah. The presence of bridge-authority and engineering officials signals a technical focus on infrastructure and transport feasibility.

The university statement emphasised that no final decision has been taken: officials will complete the comprehensive appraisal of the inspected sites in Uttara before announcing concrete plans. The release reiterated the administration’s commitment to ensuring “safe, suitable and quality accommodation” for students and stressed that decisions will follow the completion of the site evaluations.
