DU law professor Sheikh Hafizur Rahman Curzon released from jail after High Court grants interim bail

Dhaka University law faculty member Professor Sheikh Hafizur Rahman Curzon was released from Dhaka Central Jail (Keraniganj) on Friday evening after the High Court granted him interim bail earlier this week, university and jail officials said.

The jail administration received a certified copy of the High Court order on Friday afternoon, after which authorities completed formalities and allowed Curzon to leave custody, a senior official at the prison said. Colleagues and family members received him following his release, and campus circles expressed visible relief at the development.

Curzon was arrested in late August in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act after an August 28 roundtable at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), where organisers and speakers, including former minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui, journalist Manjurul Alam and others — were accused of provocative slogans and obstruction by a group of demonstrators. Police lodged the case on 29 August, and a number of participants were subsequently detained.

Earlier this month, the High Court had already granted interim bail to two co-accused Abdul Latif Siddiqui and journalist Manjurul Alam and those decisions survived a challenge in the Appellate Division when the state’s appeal was dismissed. Curzon’s interim bail was issued by a High Court bench and formalised in an order that reached the jail on Friday.

Authorities say the legal process in the case will continue: the charge-sheet and evidentiary proceedings remain pending, and the state may pursue further appeals or hearings as allowed under procedure. Meanwhile, Curzon has reunited with family and associates, and students and faculty members said his release brought a sense of relief across the university community.
