Clash at JUST: Shopkeeper arrested after student molested; 27 injured, 2 journalists hurt

A female student of JUST went to the “Monayem Telecom” electronics shop in the university’s nearby Amboottola market on the night of 24 November, and, according to police, was allegedly molested by the shopkeeper, Monayem Hossain. When fellow students confronted him the next day, the shopkeeper reportedly summoned local market committee members and tensions escalated into a large clash between students and locals.

The university’s proctor, Professor Dr. Md. Omar Faruk, filed a formal case around midday on 26 November, and law enforcement later arrested Monayem in a raid. A court ordered him sent to jail after being produced before a magistrate.

The street violence, which ignited in the Amboottola market area, left 27 students wounded and two journalists – Zahurul Islam (Daily Campus) and Imdadul Islam (RisingBD) injured by thrown bricks. Victims were treated at the university’s Dr. M R Khan Medical Centre, Jessore 250-bed Sadar Hospital, and Chougachha Upazila Health Complex. Students say the shopkeeper not only molested the junior student but also threatened the group and called in local men, prompting the subsequent chase, stone-throwing and the burning of a bicycle.

Student accounts describe a chaotic scene: fourth-year chemical engineering student Sabbir (named in the report) said they confronted the shopkeeper, who allegedly refused to apologise and instead brought reinforcements; the confrontation quickly turned violent, forcing students to flee as they were attacked. Tensions grew so high that students later encircled and briefly detained the vice-chancellor and proctor, demanding resignations and presenting a six-point list of demands; senior administration members visited the injured at the hospital. Security forces army, RAB and police moved in around 9 pm to restore order.
JUST officials criticised the delayed police response. Proctor Dr. Md. Omar Faruk told reporters that teachers tried to control the situation but the late arrival of law enforcement allowed the clash to escalate, resulting in many injuries; he also confirmed the administration’s steps to ensure medical care for the wounded and said the university would hold emergency talks with the market committee to prevent recurrence.
