Barishal University (BU) has approved a full waiver of fees for students who were injured during the July–August 2024 unrest, the administration announced on Thursday. The fee relief covers tuition, examination fees, transport charges, department development fees and all hall-related dues for the listed injured students.
The decision was formalised in a circular signed by Acting Registrar Khan Sanjia Sultana, follows approvals at several governance meetings earlier this year, including the university’s 50th Academic Council (23 June 2025), the 46th Finance Committee (21 August 2025) and the 90th (29 August 2025) and 91st (11 October 2025) Syndicate sessions. The waiver has been backdated and is effective from 6 February 2025, the notice states.
According to the circular, any injured student listed for the waiver who nevertheless paid the affected fees after 6 February 2025 may apply for a refund or account adjustment; the administration said such cases will be resolved on the basis of individual applications. The university did not publish the precise list of beneficiaries in the public notice, but said the measure applies only to those verified as injured during the events.
University officials framed the move as part of steps approved by statutory bodies to support students harmed during campus unrest. The filings cited the formal minutes and approvals taken across academic and financial committees before the syndicate ratified the final decision. The circular instructs relevant offices — exams, finance, transport and hall administrations — to implement the waiver and to process any eligible refund claims submitted by students.
The announcement is likely to provide immediate financial relief to affected students and their families, many of whom had reported medical expenses and disruption to their studies following injuries during the protests. The university’s backing of the waiver also closes a procedural loop after earlier deliberations across committees and syndicate meetings this year.
