A technical subcommittee at Dhaka University, staffed with structural experts from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), on Thursday carried out a detailed inspection of five residential halls and hostels as part of a rapid post-earthquake safety assessment. The team examined Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall, Shamsun Nahar Hall, Dr. Qudrat-e-Khuda Hostel, Athlete Sultana Kamal Hostel and Kobi Sufia Kamal Hall, university sources said.
The inspections form part of a broader auditing programme launched by the university after recent seismic activity raised concerns over the structural integrity of campus buildings. The central coordination committee, chaired by Treasurer Prof. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury – has delegated four subcommittees to complete a technical monitoring, evaluation and audit of halls and other campus structures as quickly as possible. The BUET experts who led Thursday’s visit included Prof. Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed and Prof. Dr. Nazrul Islam from BUET’s civil/structural departments.
University officials and hall authorities accompanied the BUET team during the on-site checks. Present at the inspections were the provosts, wardens, residential teachers, officials from the university engineering department, and student representatives from the hall councils and the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU). The joint teams carried out visual surveys and technical appraisals designed to identify immediate hazards and prioritise any urgent mitigation measures.
According to the university, the subcommittee will compile its technical evaluation into a formal report that will be made publicly available and archived with the engineering office. If any hall or building is identified as structurally risky, the administration has pledged to evacuate and relocate affected students immediately and implement remedial engineering measures where feasible. The university emphasised that student safety is the top priority as the audits continue.
The BUET-led inspections are part of a fast-track effort: the university said the expert panels will complete reviews of all residential halls and campus buildings as soon as possible. The central coordination committee — set up specifically for post-quake monitoring — aims to ensure transparency by publishing technical findings and by keeping hall administrations and student bodies informed about remediation plans and timelines.
Campus leaders called the joint inspections a necessary step to restore confidence among residents and parents. “We have formed multiple subcommittees and invited the country’s leading structural engineers to ensure no risk goes unchecked,” a university statement said, adding that the engineering office will keep records of all technical evaluations. The administration also urged students to follow any temporary relocation orders if a building is flagged for danger.
