Jahangirnagar protest exposes deeper governance problem: Demand trial for teachers accused of backing July attacks and exam irregularities

Students from the National Chhatra Shakti (JU unit) held a protest outside the new administrative building at Jahangirnagar University on Thursday, demanding that teachers alleged to have aided attackers during the July movement and those accused of exam irregularities be immediately prosecuted.

The demonstration, organised around 1:30–2:00 pm and moderated by the university unit’s organiser Kazi Mehrab, brought together activists who accused the university administration of protecting implicated faculty members. Protest speakers said that while students responsible for violent incidents during the July upheaval have faced action, the teachers who allegedly supported those attacks and were involved in “result tampering” remain unpunished.

Speakers at the rally included Khondaker Al Fahad and Nadia Rahman, who argued the administration’s delay amounts to betrayal of the student movement’s aims. Another organiser, Ziauddin Ayan, warned that if the university does not act, students will mobilise to force the administration’s removal as happened with a previous vice-chancellor.

Protesters demanded that the university speed up internal inquiries and hand over implicated faculty to appropriate legal channels. They accused an “Awami-leaning syndicate” within the campus of blocking disciplinary measures against the teachers and called for transparent, timely judicial action. The demonstration remained peaceful, and organisers said it was intended to keep pressure on the administration to act.
University officials did not immediately issue a statement responding to the protest. Student organisers said they will escalate pressure if authorities do not publish a clear timetable for action.
