Begum Rokeya University’s administration has taken disciplinary action against students involved in a ragging incident at Bijay 24 Hall on 23 November 2025, suspending three students for varying periods and issuing warnings to nine others. The decision made in the university’s 118th syndicate meeting on 26 November was confirmed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Shawkat Ali.
The expelled students are named as Abdullah Al Mamun, Rafi Ahmed and Azizul Hakim. According to the disciplinary order, Mamun and Rafi have been expelled for two academic years, while Azizul has been expelled for one academic year. In addition, nine students from the 16th batch of the Bengali department Moniruzzaman, Golam Morshed Tami, Meghnath Ray, Masud Rana, Saidur Rahman Shakil, Md. Sujon Mia, Akram Ali, Fahim Islam and Farad Hossain – received formal warnings for their alleged involvement.
The incident reportedly began late on 23 November when senior students summoned several 17th-batch (first-year) students to the hall roof under the pretext of “teaching them manners.” The accused then slapped a first-year student, Din Islam, who was reportedly reduced to tears; the commotion drew other residential students, and two accused fled the scene when confronted. Following the complaint, the hall provost formed a three-member inquiry committee and ordered a report within 24 hours. The subsequent disciplinary committee reviewed the committee’s findings and adopted the punitive measures unanimously.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. Shawkat Ali stressed that the university maintains a zero-tolerance policy on ragging, and disciplinary steps were taken swiftly after the inquiry. The administration’s actions – expulsion for multiple semesters and formal warnings are intended to deter hazing practices and protect campus residents’ safety and dignity.
